new to Thassos - advice please

Beitrag von charlie7 »

Hello everyone.
I have holidayed in San Stefanos, north west Corfu for the last 13 years. I'm looking for a change but wanted somewhere with a similar feel to it! I posted this on the San Stef/Corfu forum and a few people suggested Thassos - so here I am!
What we are unsure of is which resort on Thassos to go for. There are 4 of us, myself, husband and 2 sons aged 2 and 7 and we like to play around the pool or on the beach (sand preferable to pebble) by day (little one still sleeps in the afternoon) and go for a meal and a wander in the evenings. Don't want nightclubs, karaoke etc. - like a bit of sophistication! The odd pool table/singer/bit of Greek dancing are quite enjoyed by the 7yr old though. Like an authentic market, shop or too if possible as well.
So, please help, which resort would people recommend? And any particular apartments?
Many, many thanks in advance.
Cathi.

It depends on how quiet you want your beaches and pool. Pacis and Rachoni and nice with a few tavernas scattered around. Limenas the main town has two local beaches Vounelis and one by the old port. This can get busy but has lots of taverna's and cafe's. Panagia and Golden beach are also very nice places to stay. For total peace and quiet there is Kinira and Aliki. Aliki has a double bay and two taverna's but not much night life. If you stay in Limenas you have the beast of both worlds if you hire a car. You have all the shops, cafe's taverna's and you can drive to a different beach each day. There is also Makryammos which is very beautiful with a pool, lovely stretch of beach, nice views, a taverna, two bars, childrens park, childrens play school by the pool and tennis courts. There are Peacocks and Deer that roam around by the rocks and trees. This is only a 20 minute walk into the main town of Thassos but up hill slightly on the way back.A taxi would not cost much.

Hiya. Stayed at Zafira Studios last year with our 12 and 8 year old. Been to thassos before but not these studios, was perfect for us, lovely owners, great guests and choice of beach or pool. We hire a car for few days to get around but you can walk to local supermarket and tavernas. Thassos town easily accessible by bus or taxi. We loved it and rebooked for this year whilst drinking at their bar last year! Kids loved it too. :)

2 weeks 6 days Vinnie, very jealous!

There is not a resort on Thassos that has Karaoke and nightclubs everywhere!
There are a few clubs dotted around the island but nowhere has a strip where there is endless bars and clubs.
I always stay in town as it has a lively lived in centre, with a lovely old harbour area and day to day living going on, yes the town has expanded with tourism but it is not a purpose built resort which IMO can be soulless.
I would say that Golden Beach would be worth a look as far as beach is concerned but it is more of a resort.

Hi
For the ages of your children I think you can't go wrong with Golden Beach. We have stayed there most years since our son was 4 months old (and when pregnant!) and he's now 12 years old.
The resort is mainly the beach and a few tavernas, but there is the option to have a walk along the beach to the next resort, Skala Potamia, which is more lively and which takes around 30 mins, depending on where in Golden Beach you are - or there is also now a "Fun Train" which runs between these two resorts, which your children will love.

Thomson go here from Gatwick/Manchester/Birmingham. We have always stayed at the Emerald/Smaragadi, which you will hear has a steep hill to it, but the views are worth it and we always managed to push the buggy up it!

That said wherever you decide to stay will be beautiful

What's 1950's mentality ? Don't understand this comment at all ? Been to Corfu a few years ago - Corfu Town was noisy . full of traffic , loud - we stayed down at St Georges South - quieter . food ok ish, but still lots of very busy big hotels . Of course if you want culture you can also go to Kavos !!!!!!!!!!!!

If 1950's culture means no places like Kavos , really friendly people . paradise beaches , smaller tavernas where you get personal service second to none , no ignorant lager louts making you embarassed to be English then give me this 1950's culture any day !

Skala Prinos is good

Beitrag von wasaloadie »

Hi Charlie,

We've been going to Thassos for the 4 years out of the last 5. We prefer Skala Prinos (Socrates Plaza). Nice small village with a port across to Kavala. The Socrates is right on a sandy beach (only a small beach in depth) shallow waters, great for swimming. The hotel has a good clean pool. The owner (George) is brilliant and cant do enough for you, hospitable to kids too). There's a pool table and table tennis table. Just a short walk (100m along the beach) into the village with plenty of tavernas and things to do, they ofeten have a small fairground, bouncy castles etc for the kids. If staying there with youngsters then a mountain view is prob best as the sea view rooms tend to be over the bar which if the adults get noisy could disturb the kids. Otherwise a lovely little resort. George has quiz nights, local entertainment (including dancing). Thompsons do a package to this hotel. They look after you from the moment you touch down, baggage taken separately, they bus you to and from the ferry and usher you where you need to be. Hope you have a nice holiday. Al & Jan
