Flying home from Kavala
Hi,
Has anyone flown back to UK recently?
Some friends returned from their holiday in Zante last week and said the airport were charging 9 euros per kilo for excess baggage-this may seriously affect the amount of Metaxa, Ouzo and assorted Greek goodies we bring home!! In all our years of travelling we have never come across this before. Any info please?
Thanks
Jane n chums

Yes that's correct. We came home 3 June and on the way to the airport the rep said charges of 9 euros per kilo excess baggage was being charged.
When we checked in, we were 6 kilos over and the check in clerk wanted 54 euros. I said as we didn't have any hand luggage we were still within our limit. She made us take the small case as hand luggage, but we forgot that we had drink & honey in it. when it was scanned we had to open the case and throw away all the liquids (so beware).
Also something that we didn't know, as we were landing we were told not to bring in meat, plants ect. But honey was also on the list. When we checked with the cabin crew she said it was something new. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

yep ... we got stung 90 euros for being 10 kilos over in May, that was between 3 of us!! was not amused and then to top it all I forgot that in the bottom of my bag was a small jar of honey we had got the day before and they confiscated it ... what was even more riling was the fact that they were selling the same honey in the shop airside
but still going back next year

Hi folks
thanks for the information-much appreciated and it will hopefully alert other travellers to help them avoid unpleasantness at the airport.
the greek shopkeepers are going to be hard hit if we tourists can't take our souvenir n present shopping home-i know i can get olive oil etc in ASDA or Tesco or wherever but its not as much fun as bringing the real deal back-it always seem to taste better!
thanks again

Hi,
We recently returned from a fantastic holiday in Thassos staying at the Galaxy Hotel, Thassos Town.
At Thassos airport you were not allowed to take any liquids, including honey through in your hand luggage, I presume you could buy it in the duty free shop once you had been through the scanners etc.
The one problem we had which seemed huge at the time, was that our luggage did not arrive on the truck to be deposited outside the airport, three coachloads of baggage was left there, and our luggage was not amongst it. We had put it out in plenty of time at the hotel, to be collected by the luggage truck, but someone had put Birmingham luggage in front of our Gatwick luggage and it was not picked up. After frantic calls by the Thomson rep it came over on the next ferry, it was a close call as they were waiting to close the flight. Luckily all turned out well!
Hope you all have a fab. time in Thassos.

Yes we got caught with overweight baggage at Kavala on our return flight on friday!
We were 10 kilos over and it cost us E75!
Its not going to do the souveneir business on the island much good!
I had bought a lovely wooden vase ,some nuts and honey, they ended up very expensive!
I might have been cheaper posting them!
We flew with XL and Kosmar.
Our flight had a V after the flight number and that turns out to mean that its a "low cost" flight. We had to buy meals on the plane,on the way out I paid £5 for pasta (well 12 bits of pasta and a little pasta sauce!)The choice was limited as we were sat in the middle of the plane and most things had sold out before the trolley dollies got to us!
On return I bought a panini to take away from a cafe in resort, much nicer

i have to say that the choice of meals must be a nightmare for the staff .
Instead of chucking (sorry serving) a pre-set meal to everyone ,they have to constantly explain what is still available to those passengers not in the front few rows.
I never minded the old style airline food ,it was part of my holiday
.however I do object to £5 for a spoonful of pasta.
I wasn't buying any more food after they got E75 for to carry my souveners home!
The charging for extra baggage was well set up as they had a "cashier" at another desk to take your money.
They didn't complain when I bought another 3kg worth of baggage in the form of Duty paid vodka!

It should be OK , we took sandwiches on a flight to Rome in november. And the other half flow out to Poland this morning with a bag of goodies , so we will see how that went, I will contact the airport the day before we go as i never trust they will not change things
. But thanks for the thought
