scooter riding

Beitrag von Resha »

We want to hire a scooter to drive across the island, now I read that the law in Greece is a bit different from the rest of EU country's when it comes to drivers licenses.
Can we hire a scooter with our Dutch drivers license??

Hi Resha,

As far as we know our UK Car licence is a provisional for motorcycles upto 125cc. However in Greece you need a FULL Motorcycle Licence to ride the Scooter. This is according to our holiday reps information.

Hope this helps.

Hiya,

We hire a scooter every year and all we ever show is our FULL UK drivers licence. We find the scooter by far the best way to travel around the island - nice cooling breeze and still getting a tan at the same time...!

Can't wait to get back there...counting the weeks...!

Cheers

Hope I don't tread on anyones toes by trying to clarify this, but in the UK you now have to pass a CBT (compulsory basic training) course which lasts (usually) for a couple of days before riding any scooter/MC on the road.

Haven't a clue about the Greek law though! However, please, please remember that Greek tarmac/ gravel rips flesh from bones just as fast as the uk stuff does- and cover up!

I know it's not quite the image- but the first thing my instructor did was graphically demonstrate how much skin & flesh was ripped away, and how quickly, by even the slowest speed "spill". It's stayed with me.

Have fun!

Hiya,

Quite agree with the safety aspect! My hubby has been riding motorbikes since he was 17 (quite some time then!! ) but still takes lots of care, as long as you don't go mad you'll be fine.

Have FUN...!

I always take a helmet and if they don't offer, I ask. The police are not very consistent about enforcing this rule so it's better to avoid a fine and protect your head! (No matter how many people you see without them, and how good it feels to have the wind in your hair!)

And definitely take it steady, roads are somewhat unpredictable and has been mentioned there is often quite a lot of gravel on the roads. Perfect for skidding on! My housemate experienced a Greek A&E last year - he stood in a queue for two hours and said the girl behind him had a serious facial injury and large amount of skin missing from her leg. Even she didn't get a seat!

I personally love mopeds though I am never in a hurry to get anywhere on holiday so it suits me fine.

Thank you all very much for the replies. We will see what the answer will be if we show our Dutch drivers license.
We always wear a helmet when we hire a scooter abroad, so yes we will be careful and are absolutely in no hurry when we're driving. Because..hey it's holiday so no stress!!!
First time doing Thassos-island, looking forward to it. Sounds nice to land on main land and then take the ferry to your holiday spot!!!
By the way is there someone with some info about app. Rania in Skala Potamia??
