Just booked for 2012, reluctantly with Thomson (cheaper than booking a flight, car + accomodation in August) and was amazed that they have actually decreased their baggage allowance to 15kg. To buy a further 5kg now costs £15 per person. When we questioned why this was so, we were told that "all tour operators were doing this" Yet another "hidden" cost not revealed until you have selected your holiday!!!
Come on Easijet - please start looking at the Birmingham to Kavala route!! It's time we were able to kick Thomson into touch!!
It would appear that not only do they treat the hoteliers in thassos badly, but their customers too!!!
Moan over - roll on August!!
I think you may have been lucky, Tigerlily. Maybe you booked in time before they changed it. I have just been ploughing through the Thomson's site, which is a bit ambiguous and not easy to follow. Eg. sometimes baggage is allowed at 20Kg but that may include hand luggage, or sometimes it is different between flight only and package deals. Anyway, this is a direct copy from the website, and seems pretty clear:
"Thomson Airways Baggage Allowance
Standard luggage allowance
Each customer is entitled to a check-in allowance of up to 15kg baggage and a maximum 5kg for hand baggage (max. dimensions: 55cm x 40cm x 20cm).
Adding Extra Baggage: Up to 10kg extra hold baggage allowance can be purchased for an extra charge during the holiday booking process. You can also add extra baggage before you travel by visiting our Flight Extras website."
i can understand why you wish to come to the beautifull island of Thassos but i question why now ! inflation is raging & it is no longer a 'cheap holiday' the scenery hasn't changed but it now caters very much for eastern europeans with fast food type dining.
if you enjoy Greek holidays go to the islands with a greater majority of English holiday makers cos that tends to keep the prices down - here you will pay 4 euro for a beer (mythos),fuel is now more expensive than UK.
Wonderfull island, lovely people (as long as you are a tourist) better out of season
Hi Janet
I'm afraid Thassos is just under my skin! I agree that it's not a cheap option anymore, but it's such a wonderful place. I would rather pay a little bit more to visit an island unspoiled by hoards of "Brits abroad" swilling cheap booze!! The local people are always friendly and seem genuinely pleased to see returning visitors.
It would be great though if another airline would fly in to Kavala, so that Thomson didn't have the monopoly on flight prices.
Cant wait for our two weeks of sunshine in August 2012.

I was paying 2.5/3 euros last summer for a large Mythos and the food in the tavernas is fantastic, its still cheaper to eat and drink than the UK I would say about 15/20% cheaper.

big al, i'm with you.
if i`ll follow janets coments, it would mean a increase more than 100%!!! this is unbelievable and really not true.
prices must have shot up in last 4 weeks as at 2 october 2011 I purchased Amstel and Mythos at 2.50 and Vigina 2.00 in the bars. Only the very posh restaurant was 3.30 euro.but the food there was fantastic.
I did cut down though and enjoyed couple on the balcony before going out and 500ml bottle of virgina was only 60 cents and 500ml small can Mythos was 85cents..
I would say we need as many as possible to keep returning to ensure the package holidays from U.K are still available. The option of the Thesalonika detour looks good to start your holiday but i would not fancy the hassle when its time to go home.
However returning to subject topic we booked in aug 2011 through Just and our luggage allowance would have only been 15 KG but we paid the extra. Although 50% of what we took over we did not wear.
Steve
I have a feeling the luggage allowance differs from package to flight only. We are arriving via Thessaloniki this Saturday, usually manage to get the last ferry without a problem. Will have a Mythos for you guys.
