What first attracted me to have on holiday on Thassos.
I was looking through the Thomsons Small & Friendly brochure for Greece sometime in the late 1990s .Just looking for inspiration. When I came across a photo of Golden Beach which showed a mother and daughter on the sands with the Fedra Pension in the background. I was hooked, never been there before but it made an impression. Next day down to the travel agents and booked 2 weeks at the Fedra for May.Best snap decision ever made.
the photo I have submitted here is roughly the same angle to the one that attracted me. The Hotel on the left is the Golden Sands which had a huge dining area ,part of it was later sold off to the next door Fedra. For all I know they might still be using that original photo on their brochures. Ron.

Hi Ron,
We stumbled upon Thassos by chance 5 years ago. I wanted my husband to experience Greece so whilst looking for offers on the web we came across Nostos Studios in Golden Beach at a very, very, very cheap price for a week in September. We took our chances, wondering why it was so cheap, and have never looked back since.
Although it rained every day, excpet one, there was something magical about Thassos that has drawn us back every year.
We now spend 2 weeks every June at the Nostos, we just love the fact that Thassians are so friendly and welcoming and that we are recognised upon our return. And even though it's a small Island there are still many places for us to visit and discover.
We have now conquered Ypsario, by foot, so this year it is a search for the pool of sirens, have researched the whereabouts, and a visit to lake Maries.
Not too long to wait

What first attracted me to have a holiday in Thassos
We first went to Golden Beach in the 90's, the first time my son-in-law had been abroad, we stayed at Blue Bay and had to wait at the Fedra [one of the few taveras in those days ] for one of the 'boys' to drive us up the track. We fell in love with the island and have been back several times and seen the resort grow. After going to other islands we are going back this year to Skala Rachoni hoping to capture more of the feeling we had at Golden Beach in the early years.

what first attracted me to holiday on Thassos
After several hols to Greece visiting Santorini, Corfu, Zante, Kefalonia etc my husband and I were looking for somewhere a little different - we came across Thassos by accident and took a chance. We fell in love with the island which now feels more like home than home does!
I think about/miss Thassos everyday
Anyway not long now to hols
Haven't given up hope of moving to Thassos or having a holiday home there or if all else fails spending a few weeks there each year once hubbie retires in a few weeks.

What first attracted me to have a holiday on Thassos?
Hi to Ron saunders47 and nicnak32....this is my first post on this forum about the wonderful island of Thassos. To answer the question posed......In 1999 our children had finally flown the nest so we decided to have a holiday on a Greek island, we literally stuck a pin in a map and it landed on Thassos! We are so glad it did, it was like a second honeymoon, just glorious. So we are returning for the third time in August, this time to Golden Beach, in fact to Nostos Studios, so if it's not too cheeky.....nicnak32 what are they like? Naturally we have looked at them on the net and they seem to be great. Would you recommend we e-mail and ask for a specific room with a sea or mountain view, which tavernas would you suggest etc etc? I hope you don't mind me asking...we are in our 50's and just want a peaceful time, good food, hire car for 4 or 5 days so we can get to Aliki beach (my favourate place in the world!)......So with thanks in anticipation and only 122 days to go.....regards from Tucci

Ah Aliki - also my favourite place in the whole world!
U can get the bus to Aliki as well. Think there is only one there and back each day but it does the job and has always turned up for us!
Can't wait to go back to Thassos and Aliki - have a lovely lunch looking out over the beautiful bay - heaven!

It's great to hear how and why we all chose Thassos and just how many of us return year after year after year to this amazing place. My now husband took me there five years ago. He had been visiting the island for ten years and wanted to share the place with me. Wow - how I fell in love with the place the people and the way of life.
I wouldn't choose anywhere else in the world for my two weeks summer chill out time. We stay up at the Emerald studios in Golden Beach, where the view is to die for and the welcome is awesome.
We too hope to buy a house on the island when we retire in a few years time and are busy trying to learn Greek (tricky to say the least)
Back there in August and can't wait for my fix!

Hi Jocelyn.....good to know there are other folk out there with a bit of spare time! Aliki...I just couldn't believe how lovely the place is, I have a great arial photograph as a screen saver so that everytime I log on it lifts my heart! People always say "Where's THAT!" Of course I just say "It's where I'll be in August." I tell folk about Thassos all the time but sometmes wonder whether it will just encourage more to go there, however I know they'll have a wonderful time if they do manage to make it. Where do you stay when you're there? And congratulations to the Geordies for getting back to the Premiership (if football interests you).

Football - oh yes - hubbie , sons, daughter, son in law are all ecstatic that 'the toon' r back in prem.
We have always (so far) stayed in Limenas at various hotels/apartments including the Laois, Antigone and the Galaxy. Going back to the Galaxy in May and going to check out The Four Seasons at Glydaki as have heard v good reports. Also checking out rentals when there for a longer stay at some point.
I have lots of spare time as I am now retired - bliss.
I tell everyone about Thassos but also worry about encouraging too many people to visit.

Hi again Jocelyn.....retired eh!....lucky you. Although I have lived in Windermere for the last 20 odd years I hail from Whitby so I support the Boro! When we first went to Thassos in '99 I couldn't believe the colour of the sea, the sand, the people, the food etc, well you know what I mean. For my sins I'm a teacher with still 7 years of service to do, and then we'll be in Thassos at times when we are not charged the ridiculous added prices for travel time in school holidays. We still like to do the self catering bit to suit our needs, so Nostos Studios in August for us.

Early retirement - was a civil servant and a nurse before that. Daughter is a teacher - would like to take her & her hubbie and my 2 grandchildren to Thassos but school holiday prices make it difficult.
We also prefer self catering - not that I cook! too many lovely tavernas to choose from. Mental images of Thassos - the mountains, the sea, beaches, Limenas old harbour, the people, the food keep me going until I can visit Thassos once again.

Hi All
I had just returned from travelling around America and Canada in 1983 and didn't want to stay in the UK but being skint I did not know how to get away for the following summer.
It was then that I spotted an ad in the Daily Mirror I think it was asking for holiday reps, I applied and went to the interview in Brighton, got the job as all we talked about in the interview was the USA and Canada as the chap interviewing me had just returned himself.
I could of been sent to Camp Africa in Morocco, S of France, Ibiza, or this little Greek island that I had never heard of before called Thassos! luckily for me I was sent to Thassos for the summer of 1984 and the rest is history!! I have spent 5 summers working on the island over the years, used to have a share in a bar and visit 2/3 times a year.
Young World has a lot to answer for there are many ex-pats who went on holiday in the 80's and stayed!
26 years later I still love the place I don't like all that is happening on the island (Building) but it is still my favourite place in the world.
to the Toon!

Hi Tucci,
Of course I don't mind you asking
)
The rooms don't really have a sea view, you can just make out the sea on one of the top floor rooms but all rooms face the mountain. I would recommend a top floor room (only 2 floors) but it is personal preference. I am sure if you e-mail and ask for a top floor room they will oblige.
George and his family are really friendly and welcoming and will meet you off the coach when you arrive. Nothing is too much trouble. The studios are very well equipped, electric kettle and toaster, they will provide washing up sponge, tea-towel and pegs for the small airer on the balcony.
There are safety deposit boxes in the rooms for hire at a reasonable price. The small bar area is very pleasant to sit and have a Mythos or two.... also there is a good selection of books that can be borrowed, I will probably be adding to their collection this year, I tend to buy cheap books for holiday and leave them for other people to enjoy.
The only downside is their pillows are hard but I tend to take my own anyway.
The bread man also makes daily deliveries approx 9.00am so you don't have to worry about getting down the supermarkets early for the fresh bread and rolls.
We have eaten at many of the tavernas in Golden Beach and have not had one bad meal, obviously everyone has their own tastes and preferences but you won't go wrong with Sotiris, Fedra, Pefka.
I think I have covered everything you have asked but feel free to ask again (or PM me) if I have missed anything out or if you require any further info.
