Bikers

Beitrag von Pendomonkey »

Hi all,

The bike rally was 'intresting' to say the least! You will be pleased to know its held in a different part of Greece each time so someone else will be unlucky next year and Kostas informs me it has only been to Thassos once before and then it was the camping site at Golden Beach - too close for comfort at the Castle Studios  . The Greeks also have a nice way of overstating and expanding all sorts of things - the 'death toll' and the number of bikers on the island changed many times

Its a shame that holidays were spoilt and the roads around Sk Prinos were littered but the financial gain for the local people must have far outweighed the inconvenience (for the locals). We were lucky in that we had the benefit of our friends and their excellent home and pool. It was also the middle weekend of our two week stay. Kostas said it would be sensible to 'stay at home' on the Saturday and Sunday so we didn't drive. Those of you who remember him from the Nautilus would know that he was itching to go and see the bikes and we were a good excuse ;)

On the Sunday, I took a chair out to the front of his place and had a couple of hours watching the bikes go by and have to say they were all pretty sensible in their riding, with just a very few exceptions. Some nice bikes too. Kostas finaly convinced me that I (he) wanted to go to Prinos and we should go by Ford Focus - 'mine'! I convinced him that we should go by Dodge Nitro (the only one on the island) :smoke: - his! We went via Panagia and Thassos Town and whilst both locations had a huge influx of bikes, both places were orderly. However, Prinos was just like a place in England on a bikers day.... the roads were covered in tyre marks and there was a lot of litter. There was a hint of Death Race 2000 and we saw two 'broken' bikes in a heap on the main road.

We went into the campsite via the beach as another friend supplied the stage and sound system for the concert. The campsite was typical biker - beers, bikes and smokes. Some wild riding and a few 'events' but trouble free. We bought food and drink then returned to beach to watch/listen to the band setting up for the concert. We had a trouble free drive back to Sk Potamia in the early evening.

I wouldn't have wanted to be around Prinos late evening and can imagine what the noise and atmosphere was like well into the night. I also wouldn't have wanted to try and get a car onto the ferry on Monday.

Having ridden bikes in my (long ago) youth and been to races and rallys here in the UK I can say it was no different - just a shame it spoilt peoples holidays - but no different to someone booking a holiday on the Isle of Mann and turning up to find it was TT week. I'm not condoning the actions of the irresponsible ones, but looking at the weekend from a Thassonian point of view, a huge amount of money was spent on Thassos over those three days.

Best wishes .. Graham.

Hi Oggy..

I have to say that I enjoyed the bikes but its a shame that people had their hols spoilt by it. It must have been a hell of a shock to folk holidaying in the Prinos area

The riding I saw between Sk Potamia & Sk Prinos was by and large safe(ish) but there were a LOT of bikes and that alone can be seen as intimidating by people who haven't ridden themselves.

There's a load of pictures of bikes on my fotopic site. We were in the campsite for a couple of hours and everybody was having a good time. I half wished we had stayed for the concert on the beach. A souvenier rally tee shirt and a badge were only £10 ;)

Roll on September!

It is a shame if peoples holidays were effected by the bike rally but it was an event in Greece organised by Greeks.

Pendomonkey loved your pics by the way

We didn't really find the bikers too much of an inconvenience. We usually avoid the roads on a weekend anyway as in the past we found them to be busy. Yes the noise was irritating but we couldn't blame Thompsons or the locals and seeing as it only happens once every 7/8 yrs, it was just unfortunate that it dropped on our holiday fortnight.

Some of the motorists I encountered on my way home from work tonight we were just as bad... ;)

Hi Vinnie,

Click on this link and it should take you to my fotopic site and there you will see the section with the bikes in it :

http://trainsplanesautomobileslabradors ... topic.net/

if it doesn't work, cut and paste the link or type it in by hand. I have a link through Google too - a search on Google images for Skala Potamia, Thassos or Castle Studios, Skala Potamia should also find my fotopic site. (alough the first page shows our three Labradors in the back of a Jeep!).

Its just easier for me to put all of my images on one site. They were shot with a Canon EOS400D. Of particular amusement is the guy with the red wig and another one on a 4 wheeler/quad - its green and he's wearing a gas mask!

Best wishes ... Graham.

Holidays.........

September can't come soon enough - only problem is that I'm wishing my life away crossing days off in a diary!

We were going to America and I'm sort of wishing we still were - but Kostas looks at us the same way as our dogs do at feeding time when we tell him we won't be coming back in September - I have to say, we didn't need much convincing even though Thassos will probably cost us more than two weeks in Florida with a real car, state of the art air-con and accomodation better than home! ???

Thassos certainly has something about it

I can`t see how the bikers could have spoiled anyones holiday really. One certainly didn`t feel intimidated by them at all...a bit concerned for the safety of some of them perhaps. It certainly made a part of the holiday a bit more eventful! And, as previously stated, a boost for the economy of the island.

Well Decka, all I can say is that you were obviously not staying in Skala Prinou. If you had been you definitely wouldn't have made the comments you did.
We were in Skala Prinou. We had no sleep for 4 days. Bikers were everywhere, revving up and burning rubber all day and all night We couldn't use the taveras. One taverna even said that the bikers rode into the taverna to buy coffee! They were up and down the beach causing holidaymakers to scatter.Rubbish was piled everywhere and the bikers were urinating in the street. It was a nightmare

Point taken, I stand corrected. I never gave a thought to the poor folks stopping in Scala Prinou :( We only visited briefly and the situation there was horrendous. An hour was more than enough for us so if you were stuck there you have my deepest sympathy!!!

There are no official news yet where the 28η Πανελλήνια Συγκέντρωση Μοτοσυκλετιστών will take place. I'll watch the greek internet and inform you.

Unofficially, the internet community speaks about Samothraki, May 27th - 31st, 2009.

Samothraki ????

If there is one island where such a bikerparty does't fit, then it's Samothraki.
