Walking always plays a large part of our holidays which is one reason why we like Thassos.
Perhaps we should have a walking thread where people post details of they have enjoyed or links to info about walks.
I'll start....
I used a Marengo booklet for walking on Lesvos and found it very good. I wasn't aware (until I saw it in the reception area of the Dionysus Hotel) that they also had one for Thassos:

There is another book with a pair of boots on the front cover. Has anyone used it or has a link?

The walk from Golden Beach to Thassos town round the coast will be in the books but I'm going to do it anyway to re-live it!
Here goes:
Distance 7.3 Miles (According to her pedometer)
Time 4 hours 15 minutes (Including 45 minutes resting)
From Golden Beach head uphill to the Vigli restaurant and at it turn left at a large brown sign listing accomodations and a smaller sign pointing to Limenaz.
Follow the road to the Dionysus hotel and at the next junction after that keep straight ahead do not go to the right.
Continue to follow the track past 2 lefthand tracks. You then come to a junction that has a brown 3 way sign. The words are faded but continue straight on to Limenaz. The other words are Golden Beach or uphill and left to Panagia (another nice walk may do that one later)
After about 75 to 90 minutes from the time you started (no bragging if you walk faster than us) you will come to a righthand downhill path. This is an optional but off our main route trip to the beautiful Vathi beach that has the unfinished hotel. We spent 30 minutes there. (Photo 1)
About 10 minutes after the path to Vathi beach you come to the marble quarry (Photo 2). There is a path off to the left but we ignored it and carried straight on through the quarry. At the end of the quarry there is another path off to the left we also ignored that may or may not meet the path we saw at the start of the quarry. I don't know when the quarry may be in use but we have this walk twice on Sundays when it was empty. I would be carful walking through the quarry if it is windy as you don't want to get any particles in your eyes.
From the quarry continue round past the beach with the shipwrecked green tanker (Photo 3). This is was grounded during an attempt to smuggle cigarettes. Please only take one carton of 200 cigarettes per person in your group so there is enough left for everybody.
After a beach continue uphill. Eventually you come to the entrance to the Makryamos Bungalows. Both times we got there no one was about though I have read somewhere that you have to pay to go in. It is quite a long and windy walk down to the beach and there is a restaurant there. If you decide not to go down to the beach but are feeling tired, just inside the entrance were 2 or 3 white plastic chairs in the shade (it wasn't me guv it was her who needed a rest)
From the Makryamos Bungalows you could follow the road into Thassos but we have never done that. Instead when passing the Romanticos on the right turn immediately right and go on a track uphill.
This next bit is a bit fuzzy. We have done it 2 ways
a) In 2003 I think we turned right and walked along a wall, then through an olive grove until rejoining the coastal path.
b) This year we ignored the right turn and continued straight on. Ahead and to the left you can see the hill at the top of the walk to the amphitheatre. This year we left the track and took a small path down the hill to rejoin the coastal path.
Once on the coastal again continue onwards through plenty of trees. A track joins you coming down from the right. This is an optional diversion to see the amphitheatre from the rear. The amphitheatre main entrance was locked again but you get a much better view of the amphitheatre from this side (Photo 4). You could continue upwards and at the top view the paths you have walked on, then go back down to Thassos from the other side of the amphitheatre or rejoin our walk the same way you came.
From the right turn off to the amphitheatre continue until you come to a small church on the right (Photo 5). We always leave the route here to go down past the church and to the restaurant Kanagio?. This has a superb decking area at the rear with a nice breeze to regenerate your aching limbs (Photo 6). There is also a beach with free sunbeds.
From the restaurant just continue on the road the short distance into Thassos town.
I enjoyed doing that it almost felt as though I was there again
If anyone knows any part of this walk that is incorrect or has changed please let me know so I can edit it and keep it up to date.

- Golden Beach to Thassos Walk
Zuletzt geändert von Steve H am 09.10.2005, 10:06, insgesamt 1-mal geändert.
Very evocative, Steve. I could almost hear and smell the sounds and scents of Thassos . . . thank you.
Had to laugh, though, at the part about Vathi beach - very Scooby-Doo!
"The old abandoned hotel" - (croaky voice)
"The shipwrecked green tanker - watch out for the darned, pesky smugglers" - (sound of foghorn)
Mmmm . . . I would love a plate of salad and a cool drink at the taverna, then a spot of shopping in the town before heading back . . . sorry, I thought I was there for a moment!
Can we have a daily 'Walks through Thassos' please? It would help to see us all through the chill of winter.
