It had to be done Blackdog! Which route are you taking? We're looking at going around 7th August, back on 23rd (2 adults and a 14 year old). We live in Nottingham, so it's a real pain to go to Gatwick (well going not so bad but coming back). The other alternative was Stansted with Ryanair but I fly with them so often for work am loathed to do it for holidays and their times are really late.
We are thinking of doing the first few days on Samothraki to try it out, so we have to do it independently (although Thomson price for the Emerald suites is really good at the moment!)
Any other tips greatly appreciated!
You could look at easyjet Manchester to Thessaloniki.
Aegean Airlines Birmingham to Athens and then onto Kavala.
Ryanair from East Midlands to Bergamo and then catch the flight to Thessaloniki.
We did similar from Bristol to Bergamo with Ryanair, worked fine for us.
There are also 5 flights a day from Athens to Thessaloniki with Ryanair which are cheap.
Lots of ways of doing it, none of them easy or in some cases cheap.

I'm liking the east Midlands via Bergamo - often come back from southern Italy throughthere. We did Manchester last year and it's just coming home that's annoying. East mids would be perfect. Thanks for the tip! Best I'd found so far was German wings Stansted via Stuttgart or Bonn.
Gango,
We did Manchester to Thessaloniki last year and this year with Easyjet.
It was so easy that I would gladly recommend it to everyone.
We hired a car and collected it from the airport, drove to Kerimoti, hopped on the ferry and had 2 great weeks on Thassos.
On the return route, we caught the 05:30 ferry back to Kerimoti and we're back at the airport for about 08:30,plenty of time for our 11:00 flight back to Manchester.
This year we did Manchester / Thessaloniki and it worked a treat so we've booked it again. We've booked 16 days againso that we can have a couple of nights somewhere near Thess airport on the jouney home.
Not booked digs yet, plenty of time to worry about that
Thanks for all the tips. After much surfing we finally settled on Gatwick with British Airways. Gatwick is not ideal but we did it 2 years ago and it was much smoother than Manchester last year. Also with BA felt like first class, more luggage automatically included and food for only £3 more ppl than Easyjet.
So 11 nights Thassos, 5 on Samothraki (our first time) then one back in Perea before the flight back
Wishing my life away but roll on August!
Hi Blackdog
We're staying at the hotel Aigli. We haven't stayed there before and it's on free cancellation on booking.com so if you say it's not great I can cancel! Before we've either stayed in Kavala or Thessaloniki city.
