The early bird...
I have decided that a visit back to Thassos is in order for next as I can't seem to get the place out of my system...Especially Golden Beach area. I know there is still time to return this year but the thought of all those infuriating wasps changed my mind on that idea. So I thought how about next year beginning of the season. Thought I would also try different accommodation by trying Cosmos who have just started their package trips to Thassos, alas too early for them to know what they are doing next year. So back to good ol' Thomson. First look at the first week in May and the price was well discounted so I thought why not see what two weeks would cost. Turned out it was the same price as one week, no brainer there !! I know a lot of folks don't like the early season due to places still not ready to open etc. But me ,it suits me fine. Got to find me a good drinking place as my old haunts have closed. Suggestions please ...cheers Ron..

Same her as Big Al hardly any wasps this year , returned 17th aug but was the worst year for mozzy bites had around 25 bites each....stayed in thassos town and went to golden beach for the day but was sadly disappointed , it was sooo cramped with sunbeds all on top of each other have never seen it so bad

Couldnt agree more with Marie, we also returned from Thassos on the 17th. For the past ten years we have stayed in Golden Beach but after last year we decided to stay in Thassos Town. Last year Golden Beach was crowded, but this year it was even worse!
Far too many sun beds, crammed too closely together. Whilst I realise that the local economy only has a short time to make its money, I do think that they will drive people away if they continue to cram together sooo many people.
Staying in town was a much better option, as we always rent a scooter, so are able to get out and about to some of the other less crowded beaches. Whilst I missed our regular visits at lunchtime to the Vigli and Pefka (although we did make a few trips over) we did find some great places to visit from Thassos Town.
Who knows what will happen next year... but Thassos will always be in my heart.

All of the beaches have been invaded by the dreaded permanent sun beds some worse than others but I don't find them attractive and you can hardly see the beach.
I fear the worst for the island as the chase for more tourists and money is definitely on.

Golden Beach..
Seems to be a bit of disenchantment regarding Golden Beach on this thread. Have I made the right decision I now ask myself ? Fortunately when I go it is very quiet at the beginning of the season downside being that not everywhere is open. Not being a big beach lover since on the last visit the wife tripped on some decking on the beach outcome being she had to go to the island hospital to have stitches put in her face, not a happy bunny I can tell you. The looks I got as well on the flight home when I was alongside her, the word wife-beater must have been uttered more than once.
Any I digress, as long as there nice walks , friendly bars plus the obligatory sunshine and balmy evenings I will be perfectly happy.Ron.

Whats different?
Hi Murmur
Together with the other negative posts you have got me worried as I love Thassos.
Other than the crammed Golden Beach area as previously mentioned is there any other difference?
Are those beautiful views of the mountains still there, plus those waves at golden Beach, the Keromoti 45 minute stay, Ferry trip, mythos, Panagia,Greek Amstel, Aliki, view of Mount Athos, food etc still the same?
We had decided to give it a miss this year but I still keep looking on the Thomson site to check prices for last week of the season.
We have hit double figures and hoping to go June next year for 2 weeks for our 11th visit.
It may be the other desperate, depressing things going on in the world today that has brought you down.

I think you'll have a great time if you go in June Steve, we had our first two weeks this year in June and it was one of the best we've ever had... It's still a fantastic place to go no doubt.
It's just this time it's been a little tainted by the busyness of where we spend our day...we have a favourite place to soak up the sun, we have our routine and we saw a change in it this time.
Our fantastic walks we have, our lovely evenings eating out and sitting in bars people watching and our late afternoons wandering around the shops and stopping for drinks.... All unchanged and absolutely wonderful.
What I think is this.
Your English, German, Dutch etc that fly to visit the island tend to be older and go to Thassos for the peace & tranquility.
The nationalities that can drive to the island tend to be younger and look to have a different experience than us oldies maybe..... And don't get me wrong, that's fair enough... Everyone's entitled to their holiday.
I think me and the Mrs may have to adjust where we spend our days and maybe the time of year we visit.
Our problem.... Not the Islands.
Didn't mean to bring anyone down... You'll have a great time, Steve.
