Thassos - good to hear the clowns views

Beitrag von Janet »

Well maybe the clowns that responded to my earlier post really do not know what life is like here on Thassos - but how would they know ? they come here with rose tinted specs cos its a so called holiday isle,
try all of the other isles & then compare them to Thassos.
Thassians really do give the Greeks a bad name.
But now tourists are here the rubbish bins are emptied every 3 days but
they are still repairing the roadworks on Potos high st & causing mayhem on the Theologos road with installing new water pipes, the elec & water supplies are turned off most days at about 08.30 hrs for 45 mins - er why now -yes you got it to cause maximum disruption to as many people as possible - what ever maintenance/repair work could have been done during what was a very mild winter.
Have a look at Limenas ferry port, these clowns are still working on it - maybe by October these 'improvements' will be finished just in time for the last of tourists to have departed.

You sound extremely sad and angry - I know a number of ex pats who live on the island and none of them seem as unhappy with the local way of life as you do, infact they have embraced the greek way of life (the good bits and the bad!) Maybe it would be better if you returned to the UK

Clowns and reality.

Beitrag von Gardenia »

Dear Janet. Whilst I can empathise with you to a certain extent it isn't easy living within another culture. You can experience moments of utter sadness, loneliness, frustration, lack of real friendship , understanding and support. Don't concern yourself with the "clowns in rose tinted glasses" some can't see the wood for the trees. However, embrace the beauty and positive things about Thassos and put aside the negatives if possible as those vibes are not good for your karma. I recall last year an ex pat boasting to me that he has a house there and knows for sure it is never cold in the winter nor snows. He also boasted how he could speak Greek, I tested him and he hadn't a clue I just smiled and kept the fact that I had lived and been visiting the island for over 30 years. Lol. If you feel really unhappy, maybe it is time to re visit your roots and reflect. Cosmic positiveness.

Part timers in rose tinted glasses.

Beitrag von Gardenia »

Murmer, I am not sure if that attitude nor language is of any help to Janet. To quote, " swear word followed by we don't want her" who are we and did someone start a survey on " get Janet out"? Some " not all" ex pats have become very pretentious and I have experienced a snobbery between some. As an old skool resident, we never used our experiences to show we were better than other English people living there. I feel the old days were the best but that is of course only in my opinion. We cannot know who is smiling through their pain, is crying behind closed doors and fighting battles that no one knows about. One has to live within another culture and become part of a community on a full time basis for a certain period of time before one can know what the reality is. There are those that settle into it very well, some that struggle and some that become so homesick that they can never feel they will ever belong. It's quite naive of the "house buying part timers" who enjoy beach life and never actually master the language to judge others experiences. It is not always a positive one and some do live in a bubble. I think Janet must be homesick and needs to re connect to her roots to recharge her positive karma. Janet if it helps at all we have the same happening, road works, bin strikes, tube strikes, extensions being built etc. These things go on all over the planet and are not exclusive to Thassos. Thassians can be complex but so can Northerners, Southerners and living in a cosmopolitan city. We just have to embrace the positive things. :)

Ok Gardenia, point taken... But let's not forget who started this thread before you imply I'm being unfair to Janet.

You rightly say "One has to live within another culture and become part of a community".

If I may quote you from one of your posts from 2010

"OMG it the influx of Eastern
Europeans working and holidaying is more than off putting.
Sorry but it would be nice to be understood and a smile would go a long way."

Not very politically correct in a forum called Thassos International.... And may be a slight contradiction of your advice to Janet??

My 2010 post.

Beitrag von Gardenia »

Murmer you actually went back to a post that is four years old. You have far too much time on your hands. Lol. I stand by what I said at the time. I experienced bad service and unhappy attitudes from those mentioned nothing un PC about it. I had polite words with some for leaving their rubbish on the beach and also those that took most of the breakfast every morning by filling up plastic bags with bread, milk etc, to tide them over for the day. I found that really bad manners just because breakfast was inclusive doesn't mean you abandon your decorum. Lol. As I have always said, whichever country you live in, if you want to work and fit in, learn the language. I include my own country in that. My comment was not related to who actually started the post just to the aggressive language you used toward Janet. I do not know if you know each other but I was just trying to see the bigger picture on the hardship she may be feeling. To quote you, " we don't want her here." I just felt that was rather harsh. Do you live in Thassos because according to the forum you appear to live in Milton Keynes? Anyway, one cannot resist a good whinge ever now and then, as long as it remains fairly light hearted. Lol. ;)

I've got too much time on my hands?? You're the one writing the monologue... I read War & Peace quicker than I read your post.

Listen... As far as I see it this is a forum mainly aimed at people who visit Thassos for their holiday and who generally love it.

Janet saying "Thassos is a shithole" and moaning about the beer??? You think that's not going to provoke a reaction??

I just remembered your post from back then... I didn't trawl around for it.

If you want to defend your racist views by it being 4 years old then carry on... It's still bullshit.

And as a London boy, who apparently drinks "nats piss" according to Janet... I may seem aggressive..... But maybe that's the way I fucking am.

Albeit light hearted of course.

Calm down Murmer, you are so aggressive. I haven't read any such posts from Janet so I cannot comment but perhaps you could just sought it out between you. I am sure you don't really think I am racist just because I dare to not like certain traits within certain cultures. I would feel the same toward my own country folk if they behaved in the same manner. Lol. People have every right to share their positives and negatives about Thassos, we all have an opinion but it can be done in a mature way without personal attacks. Yes, I agree my posts can sometimes become protracted but by your answering them means you have taken the time and interest so it has been productive. I am writing a book so I guess that may account for my protractions, it's rather good practice. As for going to dinner darling, one needs to practice a little more etiquette before one gives an answer. ;)

By the way, I do live in Milton Keynes, but am on Thassos at the moment.

What else you gonna do whilst having me nightcap on the balcony eh??

You take care now
